437 entriesWhat is Pips?
Pips is a logic puzzle from New York Times Games built around dominoes. Each day you get a board divided into coloured regions and a tray of dominoes. You must place every domino on the board so that each region satisfies its rule: the pips might need to add up to a target, all be equal, all be different, or stay below or above a number.
The game launched in August 2025 with three difficulties every day: Easy, Medium and Hard. Each level is a separate puzzle with its own constructor, so you can play one or all three.
How to play Pips
Drag dominoes from the tray onto the board. A domino covers two adjacent cells and can be rotated. Regions are outlined and labelled with their constraint, for example "12" (pips in this region add up to 12), "=" (all pips equal) or "<3" (total less than 3). The puzzle is complete when every domino is placed and every region is satisfied.
When does the new Pips come out?
A new Pips unlocks at midnight in your local time zone. We publish hints and answers as soon as the puzzle is available and keep every previous day in the archive above.
Pips strategy and tips
- 1Start where the numbers force youA one-cell region with a sum target must contain exactly that pip value. Place those first.
- 2Count the big sumsA region of three cells that must total 15 or more needs high pips. Reserve your sixes for it.
- 3Use the unequal and equal rulesEqual regions tell you which domino halves must match; unequal regions rule out doubles.
- 4Watch the shape of the boardDominoes cover pairs of cells, so an odd-shaped corner often forces a particular orientation.
- 5Finish with the free cellsCells outside any region accept anything. Leave them for whatever dominoes are left.
