110 puzzlesWhat is Letter Boxed?
Letter Boxed is a New York Times word puzzle played on a square. Twelve letters sit around the four sides, three per side, and your task is to use every letter at least once by spelling a chain of words. Each new word must start with the last letter of the previous one, and consecutive letters can never come from the same side of the square.
The puzzle is edited by Sam Ezersky and publishes a daily "par": the number of words the NYT thinks you should need. Most expert solvers aim to beat par with a two-word solution.
How to play Letter Boxed
Tap letters on the square to build a word; lines are drawn between the letters as you go. Submit the word, then start the next one from its final letter. Keep going until every letter on the square has been used. There is no limit on the number of words, but the fewer you use, the better your solve.
When does the new Letter Boxed come out?
A new Letter Boxed is published at 3:00 am Eastern Time every day. We publish hints and answers as soon as the puzzle is available and keep every previous day in the archive above.
Letter Boxed strategy and tips
- 1Look for a two-word solutionFind a long word that covers most of the letters, then a second word that starts with its last letter and mops up the rest.
- 2Start from the rare lettersQ, J, X and Z have few neighbours. Build around them first so they do not get stranded at the end.
- 3Count the letters each word coversA word only helps if it introduces letters you have not used. Prefer words with many distinct letters.
- 4Mind the side ruleTwo consecutive letters can never share a side, so double letters like LL or SS are impossible.
- 5Use the ending as your pivotWords that end in common starting letters (S, T, R) make the next word far easier to find.
